More thorough than a routine dental cleaning, a periodontal cleaning is a preventive treatment that eliminates any early signs of periodontal disease, also called gum disease. If you have gum disease, Dr. Ko may recommend periodontal maintenance cleanings to reduce your symptoms and keep periodontal disease at bay.
You may need a periodontal cleaning if you have gum inflammation, or gingivitis. These regular cleanings help reverse the effects of gingivitis while protecting your teeth and gums from periodontal disease. Meanwhile, periodontal maintenance protects your gum and bone health by eliminating the presence of gum disease if you have periodontitis (advanced gum disease).
Dr. Ko may recommend a periodontal cleaning if you have one or more of the following gum disease symptoms:
Whether you have gingivitis or advanced periodontitis, Dr. Ko can protect your gum health with routine periodontal cleanings.
There are two types of periodontal cleanings depending on the advancement of your gum disease:
Dental experts recommend a periodontal cleaning, or prophylaxis, to patients who do not have obvious signs of gum disease, bone loss, or infection. During this preventive treatment, Dr. Ko gently removes soft plaque, tartar, bacteria, and discoloration from above the gum line and slightly below.
If you have obvious signs of gum disease, such as bone loss, loose teeth, or bleeding gums, Dr. Ko may recommend further treatment. Most experts recommend periodontal maintenance if you have pockets of plaque and bacteria trapped beneath the gum line that measure more than four millimeters.
Because a regular periodontal cleaning cannot treat the pockets of bacteria beneath the gum line, Dr. Ko uses a nonsurgical procedure called scaling and root planing to eliminate the infection.
First, he uses a dental instrument called a probe to remove hard plaque and tartar above the gum line before inserting it beneath the gum line. He then cleans the pockets of plaque and bacteria. Finally, Dr. Ko smooths the roots with planing and reattaches your gums to your teeth.
