Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are a very thin layer of porcelain that helps re-create the look of your natural teeth. Before bonding the veneers to your existing teeth, Dr. Ko goes tooth-by-tooth to fit each veneer. Veneers cover blemishes like stains, cracks, holes, or misshapen teeth. They can also restore frail teeth.

Porcelain remains the most stain-resistant material for making veneers, though veneers may also be created out of resin composite materials. Porcelain tends to do a better job replicating the look of your natural teeth enamel, too. Dr. Ko reviews your options and suggests the best type of veneers for you.

How do I get veneers?

After a meeting to talk through your veneer options and the results you’d like to see, you come back for a second appointment. Dr. Ko then removes a tiny layer of enamel from the surface of your existing teeth to make sure the veneers bond and fit properly. After your teeth are ready, Dr. Ko makes an impression of your teeth so the dental lab can create custom veneers that are an exact fit for your mouth.

You come back to have the finished veneers fitted to each tooth. Your teeth are cleaned and etched to prepare them for the bonding process. Dr. Ko then applies a unique adhesive and light source which makes the cement bond securely to the porcelain. Voila! Once the cement dries, you have a new and upgraded smile!

What’s great about veneers?

Veneers are a natural-looking means to correct misshapen, cracked, or crooked teeth. Veneers also offer these advantages:

  • Stain resistance
  • Little gum irritation
  • Ability to lighten darker teeth, so they appear whiter
  • Aesthetically pleasing with minimal dental work
  • Strengthen teeth
  • Less expensive than some other dental procedures like crowns
